With the much-hyped Indian Premier League in its 3rd day, is it really living up to expectations? I have heard opinions from both sides.
People in favor of IPL say its showcasing the world talent at your doorstep. Look at the 2 innings from Brendan Mccullum and Mike Hussey in the first 2 matches. One scored the highest ever score in a 20-20 match. The other scored a 100 in just 50 balls. How rare were these 2 innings. What a performance that was. And for once we were able to truly support a foreign player on Indian soil.
People against IPL say its not really Cricket. Its more of a gully cricket game with batsmen throwing their bats at everything. If you leave the top 3-4 players in each team, none of the other players are international class. Its more of a tv soap than a cricket match!
In my opinion, 20-20 games are like watching highlights of a one day match. They are fun to watch with the ball flying to all parts of the ground. But i also believe, its too much of a good thing. You cannot watch same kind of matches every day. It becomes monotonous. Viewers tend to lose interest. One or two games a week is what i would like it to be restricted to. One can argue that one team only plays 2-3 matches a week so you can do by watching just those.
Anyways, we would have to wait and watch how the first season of IPL turns out to be.
